Located in downtown Nanjing, the International Baccalaureate Kindergarten involves the adaptive reuse of two heritage buildings set beside a large green lawn, transforming them into a high-end IB institution.
The design prioritizes heritage preservation, maintaining the original building envelope and structural integrity while introducing a comprehensive educational program. The scheme accommodates 13 classrooms, a multi-function room, STEM labs, music rooms, an art room, and a carpentry workshop — all carefully integrated within the existing fabric.
A strong emphasis was placed on creating a healthy and child-centered learning environment, with the use of non-toxic, low-VOC materials throughout. The design process involved in-depth analysis of early childhood education needs, including classroom density, spatial relationships, indoor–outdoor connectivity, activity zoning, air and acoustic quality, and the impact of color and varied ceiling heights.
Through close collaboration with the client, the design fosters an engaging and imaginative environment that supports the school’s curriculum while enhancing students’ overall learning experience.
